Traveloni’s Traveler Reviews
Grand Palladium Colonial & Kantenah ReviewSara R., Arlington Heights, Illinois
August 2, 2012
I had an okay time overall. I would not recommend this resort to family or friends for many reasons. Although the majority of the staff was nice, the food was awful, the accommodations were okay, the resort is too spread out and we all got sick. Especially being in early pregnancy it was not fun to come home and have to go straight to an immediate care since I couldn't keep any food down and was worried about harm I may be causing my baby. Since we had never left the resort and the majority of our party had the same problem I was really disappointed in this experience. I also didn't appreciate how early Apple made us leave the resort. We could have stopped by the beach for a quick walk in the morning, but instead were brought to the airport three and a half hours before our flight departed.
We originally had ants when we started in our room. It was okay, the view looked straight at some palm trees, but it was similar to facing a wall. Not somewhere it was enjoyable to sit outside. When we talked to the desk about the ants they cleaned our room thoroughly and spraoutside. I am ten weeks pregnant so I did not want them to spray inside. The ants stopped but we usually found a bug or two everyday.
The pool space was good, the water was pretty nice, a little slimy feeling when you got out. Even though there were a huge amount of people there as long as you went early it was easy to get a chair. They had nice chairs in the pool so you could not get all the way in, which was good because most of it was too deep for me to be in comfortably.
Beautiful beach, tons of chairs, the sand was nice. Loved being here.
They had lots of things going on but they were very spread out. I did some exercises at the pool but wanted to use the gym regularly. I wasn't sure if there was a typical gym or just a sports area. It was also so far away we never usually ventured over there. Having snorkeling equipment is a joke, it's always out, I wish we would have brought our own.
The food was not good. They put a lot of effort into variety and presentation. The thing that needs work is the taste of the food. Their Mexican restaurant was less authentic then what they served on a daily basis at their buffets. The servers in the dinner restaurants were great, the staff in the buffet areas was okay. It was often hard to get silverware or basic things that you needed. This is a major reason I would probably not go back to this resort just because the food was bad. Also, three out of four people in our party all are sick leaving here. Two of us that are sick never left the resort.
They make everyone go to two specific areas. You have to go to White Sands or Colonial if you want to do anything after midnight. They have ridiculous Disney type shows that are awful. We often went to bed around 12 because we didn't want to have to switch to a different section and couldn't have drinks at our lobby.
We did a turtle trip with their dive shop. It was a little too short, but the driver of the boat did a good job showing us things that we may not have found, such as sand dollars and brittle star fish. We had to stay with him and I would have liked to have a little more time and explore a little more of the reef area.
Tips: Don't go to this resort...find another one.

Very large resort, with lots of walking. Trains made it easy to get around & were frequent.
We were upgraded to a Junior Suite. The room was spacious and clean.
Beautiful pools, very large. The water was crystal clear. Plenty of lounge chairs.
Water was rough, lots of seaweed in the morning, but cleaned up early by staff. Plenty of lounge chairs. Beach was nice, rocky in spots.
Plenty of activities, if you chose to participate. We staon the beach most of the time.
Breakfast buffets had plenty of choices. Enjothe ala carte restaurants. Staff was friendly & attentive.
NA - we were so exhausted in the evenings, after dinner we would go back to our room to relax. Did enjoy the Sports Bar & watching the Stanley Cup playoffs
Many excursions offered. We chose to take the local bus (the Collective) which was stopped right outside the resort. It worked well for us. We went to Tulum & Akumul to swim with the sea turtles.
Tips: Travel to Akumul beach to snorkel with the sea turtles - truly amazing.

The resort was very nice and very clean. The staff was great and you could always find something to do. The food was very good. The resort is very large so you get plenty of exercise after a great meal if you choose to walk. Most of the nightly activity is on the Colonial side so if you like it quiet stay on the Kantenah side and if you like nightly activity stay on the Colonial side. I would give this resort a thumbs up.
Tips: Make sure you have tennis shoes because you walk a bunch every day.
