Activities

The main attraction here are the beaches, all 36 of them! Many are only accessible by boat and guide, with different companies offering beach cruises that take you hopping from one beach to the next. It’s important to know your beaches here as some are great for beginner divers, snorkelers and swimmers while others can be a little on the rough side for the inexperienced! Shopping is something you have to do, even if you’re just browsing. There are coffee plantation tours (real tours aren’t found along the coast, talk to your concierge), mezcal shops, chocolate and some of the best pottery in all of Mexico. Oaxaca is THE place for art here, so don’t miss out! Ecotourism is a major attraction, with Eco-parks being the equivalent of National Parks in the US run by private interests. You can go white water rafting, climbing, hiking, on a jungle safari or swim along beautiful rainbow reefs and massive schools of colorful tropical fish.

Dining

A convergence of global dining in a Spanish colonial atmosphere… what’s not to love? From grabbing a quick bite to eat on the beach from a taco cart to French fusion and even chocolate fried crickets (ONLY when you ask for them!), Hualtulco has a lot to offer even the most fervent foodie. Seafood is best here, but you can find vegetarian and red meat options too! Portales sells grilled cactus (yum!) and delicious meat and seafish tacos. L’Escalote is one of the best fusion restaurants you’ll find around with a full menu of indulgent treats, and there’s even an ice cream shop that’s open into the wee hours of the night.

Nightlife

Most of the nightlife options are offered by different all-inclusive resorts, but you can always visit another resort’s club for a cover charge. La Minoa, Papaya and Crema are some of the best places to visit. Bars are always a great option (but remember, foreign tourism is a bit light so bars are mostly frequented by locals!) Café Dublin is a great if you’re looking for an authentic Irish pub, and Crema specializes in all kinds of mezcal and tequila.
