Overview

When you choose the Cayman Islands for your vacation, you’ll have a trip filled with excitement or relaxation; this chameleon of a holiday spot gives you just about everything you need to build the getaway you’ve been dreaming of for almost any taste! Nightlife can be as glittery as it can be laid back, and you’ll be able to find the right place to match your taste. Here’s a taste of what’s waiting for you in the Caymans.

Activities to do in the Cayman Islands

Go swim with the stingrays, swim along the barrier reef and lay along white sandy beaches that make this place the playground of the rich! You’ll be able to take a submarine ride deep down (a whopping 12 to 20 feet) and see how the other 80% of the world lives. There are different festivals that happen in the spring and fall, so you’ll want to check them out; festivals usually don’t happen when it’s hurricane season but you shouldn’t be visiting then anyway! While you’ll find a bunch of activities in the water, you’ll also find a bunch of stuff to do on land. Shopping is great here, and you can find jewelry made out of the islands own semi-precious stone caymanite as well as black lava rock.

Great Places to Eat

Dining in the Caymans can range from fabulously expensive to cheap and fast. You’ll find fun restaurants like Chicken! Chicken! and the Cracked Conch by the Sea has a cute nautical theme that’s fun for families and couples. If you’re here as a guest of an all-inclusive resort hotel you’ll be able to eat for free as part of your package, sampling tastes from all over the world at a fraction of what you’d spend outside the resort hotels.

Enjoy the Nightlife

Nightlife in the Caymans is great, but you’ll want to stick to Grand Cayman for the best parties. There are about a dozen great bars along the beaches and you’ll be able to meet tons of new friendly people. If you’re looking for that exclusive club experience, you’re going to want to check out the clubs of Seven Mile Beach like The Attic and O Bar (O Bar is extremely ritzy). The Corner Pocket is great for gaming and drinking, and there are so many other places you can check out along the way.

You’ll find so much to do here, and all you have to do is get out and start exploring what the Caymans have to offer you for your next vacation!

The Caymans are warm in the summer when the average daily high reaches 85°F (29°C). Winter is drier and cooler, with average daily highs of 75°F (24°C).

Activities

ACTIVITIES IN GRAND CAYMAN

Cayman Island Turtle Farm

The most popular attraction on the island and the only green sea turtle breeding farm in the world. Don’t miss the adjoining cafe where you can sample turtle delicacies while observing a turtle exhibit.

George Town

The capital of Grand Cayman. Be sure to visit Fort Street, a main shopping street that is home to a clock tower dedicated to King George V.

Hell

Visit this small village and be sure to stop at the post office where you can purchase stamps and postmark cards from Hell!

Beaches

Grand Cayman’s famous Seven Mile Beach is best known for its wide array of watersports, sparkling white sands and translucent aquamarine waters. The beach is litter free and sans peddlers so you can relax in an unspoiled, hassle-free atmosphere. Best of all, the average water temperature is a balmy 80°F. Other beaches which are less visited but just as fabulous are the Cayman Kai, Rum Point and Water Cay. All three beaches are a favorite hideaway for residents and have become a popular Sunday picnic spot.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

This 60-acre wilderness preserve is home to a variety of habitats and plants native to the island. At the halfway point of the walking trail is a walled compound housing the rare blue iguana found in remote parts of the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Island National Museum

Built in 1833, the structure was used as a courthouse, a jail, a post office and a dance hall before being reopened as a museum in 1990.

Cayman Maritime Treasure Museum

Dioramas show guests how the Caymanians became seafarers, boat-builders and turtle breeders. Also an animated “Blackbeard the Pirate” tells stories of the buccaneers that called the Caribbean their home. The museum is owned by a professional treasure salvaging firm so there are many artifacts on display.

Island Highlights

View major sites in the capital of George Town. Stops at the Conch Shell House (residence constructed of conch shells), the Tortuga Rum Shoppe, the Governor’s house on Seven Mile Beach, the world’s only green sea turtle farm, and “Hell”, so named for its unusual rock formations. At sunset the orange sun reflects the water collected in the pools resembling a burning hellfire. Favorite spot to mail a postcard stamped from Hell!

Atlantis Submarine

Two different dives to just over 100 feet:

  • The Expedition-a 50-minute dive exploration with automated fresh feeders to attract fish.
  • The Odyssey-a 50 minute dive exploration with divers alongside feeding the fish.

The Valhalla

Sunset and dinner cruises offering guests food and spirits during their sea adventures.

Golf

Grand Cayman offers two remarkable courses, the first is a Jack Nicklaus – designed course at the Hyatt Regency Britannia Golf Club (which can be played as either an Executive 9 or Championship 18-hole course), and the other is The Links at SafeHaven, a USGA Par-71 Championship 18 hole course.

Hyatt Regency Britannia Golf Club offers a masterful course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Reminiscent of legendary courses such as Royal Troon, Turnberry and Berkdale on the other side of the Atlantic, Nicklaus has sculpted a picturesque course with a Scottish flair, featuring grassy mounds, rolling dunes, lakes and oversized bunkers. The course has all the natural challenges and hazards of a traditional seaside or links layout. On some holes blind tee shots, pot bunkers and two-tiered greens test the golfer. On the 5th hole, the tee shot must carry over the Caribbean Sea, while on the breathtaking 562-yard hole 9, three different shots will carry you over water hazards. The Britannia course is unique in that it can be played two different ways: as a Championship course, or as an Executive course. The Cayman Ball is optional on Mondays and Fridays. Located at Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, Britannia will challenge every golfer, from the novice to the pro!

The Links at SafeHaven is a USGA Par-71 course, 6,605 yards long from the Championship tees, and proud winner of Caribbean World Magazine’s “Best Caribbean Golf Course” award three years in a row. With its sun drenched greens, tradewinds, and coastal setting, it is reminiscent of a Scottish Links course. There are five tee placements at every hole, so that the course offers great variety and interest, and provides a challenge for the best professional golfer, especially the par 3,235 yard, 11th hole (the Links Signature hole). The excellent Clubhouse features one of Cayman’s top restaurants, a patio bar, a fully stocked Golf Shop, a golf professional and ample practice facilities.

The Jolly Roger

Vintage pirate style dinner cruise ship.

3 Hour Snorkel Trip

Visit three snorkel locations: Coral Gardens, Stingray Sandbar and the aquarium.

Shopping

Having no sales tax and a large selection of duty-free merchandise, Grand Cayman offers bargains galore. For some of the island’s best buys, visit any of the shopping districts including Elizabethan Square, Cardinal Avenue and Kirk Freeport Plaza.

Dining

GRAND CAYMAN DINING

Dining in the Caymans will bring you a lot of options! Here you’ll be able to enjoy delicious meals that range from free (when you’re a guest of one of the all-inclusive resorts) to lavish. Chicken! Chicken! is a great place to get a bite to eat by the seaside without spending a lot of money. Cimbico is a great medium ranged restaurant where you can sample all kinds of Caribbean foods made fresh from scratch. If you’re looking to splurge a little, you’ll want to pop by Bacchus Restaurant and Wine Bar; here you can enjoy inventive dishes like lobster quesadillas and other fun fish dishes for under $30 a head. Hemingway’s is great if you’re looking for real outdoor fine dining, and you’ll be able to enjoy great dining for $10 to $30 a person. If you’re looking for free dining, you should check out the resort hotels; when you’re a guest you’ll be able to eat for free as part of your package! Relax with Resort Dining

When you’re the guest of an all-inclusive Cayman island vacation resort, you’ll never have to pay extra for a great meal! All you have to do is pick the right restaurant (many of the resorts will have more than one restaurant to choose from) and choose what meal you’d like to try out today. If you’d like to try out a meal at a resort you’re not staying with, you’ll have to pay so you should make a little budget allowance for restaurants outside of your resort to try.

Splurge

Splurging is what a Caribbean luxury vacation is all about, and there is no shortage of place to splurge here. You’ll want to try out Casanova’s by the Sea with its romantic atmosphere and Seaharvest with its great Indian and West Indies cuisine. The Attic is also on Seven Mile Beach (most of the clubs are) and runs from the 20-35 crowd, and the Sapphire Lounge has a great martini bar atmosphere where you can chill out and have a great drink. It’s a little on the ritzy side, so make sure you’re wearing nice clothes when you go in.
