Top 5 Exciting Things to Do in Bermuda

Ask any avid vacationer and they will quickly tell you that Bermuda sits on the top of their to-visit places on earth list. Yes, there’s no denying that it’s a prime place to simply kick back, relax, swim and savor the salty coastal air. If that’s not enough, then the spas and the duty-free shops that populate the town only add the flair and fragrance of this tropical island. That said, here are some of the top 5 things you shouldn’t leave the Bermuda without doing:

  1. Pay a visit to the Horseshoe Bay Beach – Being one of the most photographed and documented beaches in the world, it only goes without saying that the Horseshoe Bay should be your first port of call as soon as you hit the shores of the Bermuda. And unlike other famous sandy white beaches of the world, the Horseshoe Bay is simply an expansive stretch of acres upon acres of warm pink sand against the backdrop of turquoise waters. And, yes, you don’t have to worry about the rough sea – there is always a bunch of well-trained coast guards standing nearby in case of any emergency.
  2. Say a Prayer in the Unfinished Church – It might have started and ended unceremoniously as an opulent replacement of the 1870s St. Peter’s Church, but through ruins of the Unfinished Church as still as remarkable and striking as they were several decades ago. It even gets better if you’re a fan of Gothic architecture or just about anything that touches the chords of art. What’s more, the serene surroundings make it one of the best places you can take a romantic stroll without so much as the prying eyes of humanity interrupting your bliss.
  3. Learn a bit of History in the Historic St. George – If you bunked a few history classes back in the day, then the Bermuda ( through the historic St. George ) offers you an opportunity to catch up on that and much more. Being one of the oldest towns in North America, the Historic St. George is still an unusual reminiscent of the old British colonial roots. And during the peak summer tourist season, period actors can be seen roaming the streets simulating the lost forgotten native culture of the 1800s. If you’re lucky, you can also catch a glimpse of the town crier sentenced to stocks. Purely amazing.
  4. Play a little bit of golf in the Port Royal Golf Club – This is the one of the most popular and well-rated golf clubs in the Bermuda, and so it’s only fair you teed off a swing or two in the immaculate and lush green expanse that is a characteristic of the resort. And besides, it’s not every day that you’ll enjoy a round of golf side by side a tropical beach spotting gorgeous bikini girls.
  5. Play explorer in the Crystal and Fantasy Caves – For those of us who don’t mind a bit of hiking on a dreary Saturday afternoon, then the Crystal and Fantasy Caves beckon. In fact, it’s one of the last unspoiled and pristine places left on earth.

Dining

Bermuda Dining

Dining in Bermuda is all about luxury, but when you stay with Bermuda resorts you’ll be able to save some money! Unlike some other Caribbean islands, here you’ll actually get to sample local foods like cassava pies and bay grape jelly (make sure you bring some home with you!); Bermuda bananas and local fish like wahoo, rockfish and tuna are always good, and you’ll be able to find them in virtually every restaurant on the island. One good thing to keep in mind is that the closer you are to the touristy areas of Bermuda the higher the prices will be on the menu; the food won’t necessarily be better in these areas, so wander a little farther down the garden path and see what Bermuda resorts dining and Bermuda dining as a whole has to offer you.

Go Local

Local specialties are of course fish, but you’ll also find lots of great fruit based dishes like jelly, pies and everything bananas! Somerset Village has the best selection of local restaurants and close to local prices (a third of what you’d spend in St Georgetown or Hamilton for example). Flannigan’s is a local restaurant that not only serves up great Irish beers, but lobster and other local bounties of the sea that are fresh and delicious, so make sure you check it out. The Pickled Onion is local but a little pricey, with a nouveau type menu that heavily features seafood, fusion cuisine and of course the best of the best of the Caribbean.

Check Out the Resorts

When you’re a guest of all-inclusive Bermuda resorts or hotels you’ll be able to eat for free at the resort restaurants! Café Iido in the Elbow Beach Hotel has great food that has been rewarded by many different travel magazines (Lonely Planet UK for example) as a great place to eat, but it can be a bit noisy so watch out! Each resort will have its own offerings, so you’ll need to go through and sample them all. Very little here in Bermuda comes from the island; most food is imported from Canada and the US. It’s good to get the most out of your dollars by eating at the resorts and saving your cash for more fun dining trips out.

Splurge

If you’re looking to splurge, you’re going to want to head out to the touristy areas. You’ll be able to enjoy everything from the best of the West Indies, haute cuisine with European chefs and of course great Caribbean foods that will tease your tongue into coming back for more! When you choose Bermuda, you’ll have all the tastes of the world at your fingertips. You can choose from great local tastes like fresh fish chowder, lobster and rum swizzles. You won’t have to go further than the resort you’re staying in, but who doesn’t want to walk along the beach and find one of the best open air grills in the Caribbean? Let your nose be your guide and you’ll find great tastes every day you stay at Bermuda resorts.

Nightlife

Bermuda Nightlife

When you’re in Bermuda on vacation, you won’t have to look too hard to find the great nightlife that’s waiting here for you! You’ll be able to party at some of the hottest resort clubs, rub elbows with friendly locals in pubs and bars on the beach, enjoy live entertainment with a lightshow or you can go for a low key night out in one of the elegant wine bars. No matter how you choose to explore your nights out, the most important thing to do is just enjoy yourself. If something doesn’t seem like your scene, try it once anyway! Bermuda has something for everyone and the last thing you want to do is miss out on something that could be really fun!

Go Clubbing

Bermuda is a little more laid back than some of the other islands, so you won’t find tons of glitzy clubs? but the ones you do will fit the bill! If you want to dance into the early hours of the morning, you can always find a resort club open; when you’re a guest of one of the all-inclusive resorts you’ll be able to drink and party all night long for free. If you’re not a guest of the resort club you want to visit, you’ll have to pay a cover charge just like you would back home; they can range up to $35 to get in, so make sure you have money on you (US or Bermuda Dollars will work).

If you want to go to one of the local clubs, the Cellar is the place to go! Here you can enjoy magnificently retro spaces and great drinks and music. It runs more towards the top 40’s radio scene, but it’s a good place to visit. The Moon Nightclub is exclusive and beautiful, with fast paced music and friendly people. The Light nightclub is the most upscale over in St George’s, here you’ll be able to dance until dawn with great drinks and a beautiful view of the sea and many different theme nights that keep things interesting!

Live Entertainment

There’s no shortage of live entertainment here in Bermuda’s nightlife scene. The first stop should be the Coconut Rock Restaurant, where you can see live cover bands with a Caribbean twist that keep your feet moving through the night and have a great meal too. Sometimes you’ll find Tony Bari, a world class pianist, performing on the island where he lives, and you’ll also find the vocal stylings of Bermuda’s Lady of Song Gita Blakenly-Saltus. Finding a great night out is as easy as finding the right entertainment, and you’ll find tons of live music acts in the many different pubs and bars that dot the coast in Bermuda.

When you want a good time in Bermuda, all you need to do is to start walking! From the resort clubs that keep things bumping all night long, to piano and wine bars that give you a more down to earth low key nightlife experience, no matter what kind of nightlife you’re seeking you’ll find it in Bermuda.
