Planning a Safari to Africa

African Safari

Have you dreamed of going on a safari in one of Africa’s national parks so you can spot all types of different animals such as Africa’s big five in their natural habitat? If embarking on one of these adventure vacations is on your bucket list, continue reading to discover all you need to know about planning the ultimate African safari trip.

Safari locations: Where and When to Visit

The best time to book a safari in Africa is during the dry season, which falls between October and March, as this is when you’ll be able to spot a variety of animals congregating beside waterholes. If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Africa’s “big five,” then you will want to head to South Africa, Namibia, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana or Tanzania as these are some of the best spots to see them.

If you’re interested in witnessing the annual migration of zebras and wildebeests, you will want to head to the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya anytime between July and October. Alternatively if you’re looking for a traditional grassland safari experience, you will want to visit the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania where you’ll get the opportunity to see prides of lions running wild.

Tour options:

Contrary to popular belief, going on an African safari doesn’t require a willingness to rough it in an old tent. In recent years a variety of companies have launched luxury safaris that offer comfortable lodge style accommodations and luxury canvas style tents. If you choose to book a luxury safari vacation, you may even get the opportunity to enjoy fine dining under the stars. If you’re on budget for your trip, fear not as there are also a variety of affordable tours and self drive options that you can book. No matter which style of tour you opt for, make sure to choose a tour company that offers everything you want for your safari as it will make the trip much more enjoyable.

Safari essentials: What to Pack

Your safari wardrobe should consist of neutral lightweight separates that you can layer to suit the conditions. Some items to consider include khaki pants, tank tops and breathable long sleeve shirts. When it comes to shoes, I recommend investing in a pair of quality hiking boots, which will prove invaluable should you participate in guided bush walks. Also make sure to pack a high quality digital camera and a pair of binoculars that can help you spot and capture different types of animals.

Safety tips:

Before embarking on your safari ensure to book an appointment with your doctor, as you may need to get vaccinations to protect against illnesses and diseases such as yellow fever and malaria. As an added precaution, while on your safari make sure to cover up by wearing long sleeved shirts, pants and closed toe shoes between dusk and dawn to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. It’s also crucial to keep hydrated while on your tour, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors exploring. So, ensure that you and your party have enough bottled water to last for an entire day before heading out on safari.

So what are you waiting for? Africa is calling! If you’re interested in embarking on the adventure of a lifetime, you won’t regret booking an African safari vacation.

Have always dreamed of a trip to Africa but at 72 did I wait too long? How much would it cost for 2 people and how long a flight is it?
