The Dominican Republic is a beautiful, unique island in the Caribbean. The island itself it called Hispanola, it was claimed by Columbus in 1492 and gained it's independence in 1844. There are many things to do and see and eat.

Over 2,000 miles of Pacific Ocean separate it from mainland South America and it's well over 1,000 miles to the "neighboring" Pitcairn Islands.
