Destination Landmark: Petra, Jordan

Petra is an archaeological and historical city which is in southern Jordan. It’s situated between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea and has been inhabited since the prehistoric times. This city is famous for its’ amazing water conduit system and rock cut architecture. Also known as Rose City because of the color of the magnificent stone out of which it’s carved, Petra is one of the greatest tourist attraction landmarks in Jordan, where Hellenistic architecture blends with ancient Eastern traditions. It’s one of the most spectacular ancient landmarks remaining in modern world, and is certainly a must see for anyone visiting Jordan.

Because of its’ fabulous ruins and breathtaking grandeur, this incredible city was recognized as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1985. Much of the site’s fascination comes from its’ dramatic setting on the edge of the Wadi Araba. Rugged sandstone hills form an amazing deep canyon. Entrance to this city is through Siq (a narrow gorge which is over 1/2 mile in length) which is flanked on both sides by 250 foot high cliffs. Simply walking through this Siq is a mind blowing experience in itself; the rock formations and colors are absolutely dazzling. As you approach the end of this Siq, you’ll catch your 1st glimpse of The Treasury (also known as the Al-Khazneh).
